Diane Harris and Jim Hudnall met Pete Ulrich at the Oxon
Hill Farm and rode together on the Oxon Cove Trail to DC Village. Pete
had his pass to bicycle through Bolling AFB, but Jim and Diane were not
allowed by the Air Force to bicycle through Bolling. They went via M.L.
King Avenue, Malcolm X Street (formerly Portland Street), and South Capitol
Street into downtown, while Pete went through Bolling to his early morning
meeting at NASA. Jim and Diane were soon at Freedom Plaza, enjoying the
hot coffee and bagels. They were soon joined by Helen Abadzi who biked
in from her new home in Alexandria.
Several hundred cyclists listened to speeches by WABA and other bicycling advocacy groups. We met some of the people who are improving bicycling in the area. The Rally ended with a drawing for prizes, including a bicycle donated by City Bikes. After the Rally, most bicyclists finished their commutes to work, enthusiastic about the future of bicycling in Washington. |

| Diane and Jim took the day off and rode the trails of DC. The first stop was at the Georgetown waterfront. Then a stop on the Capital Crescent Trail (while Jim changed a flat.) We saw many other cyclists enjoying the Capital Crescent Trail, the Georgetown Branch Trail, and Rock Creek Park. From the Potomac waterfront and through Southwest, we crossed the South Capital Street Bridge and went into the Anacostia Naval Station (the Navy not being as restrictive as the Air Force.) We had spectacular views of the city from the new riverside trail through Anacostia/Bolling before returning on the Oxon Cove Trail to the Oxon Hill Farm. |
