My name is Jim Hudnall, and I am speaking tonight on behalf of the Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club. This club promotes and encourages bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation, encourages the use of bicycling facilities, and promotes the establishment of new and better facilities. Legal cycling on streets, roads, and highways can be safe, clean, healthy, enjoyable, economical, and beneficial to our county. I encourage you to recognize and promote bicycling as a legitimate form of alternative transportation. Some of the roads that have long been used by cyclists now have signs forbidding bicycles. I urge you support legislation that recognizes bicycles as vehicles with a legal right to be on our county and state roads. Make it safer for bicycles to share the road with cars by insisting that all state and county road improvements have either shoulders or wide outside curb lanes. Support a statewide Bicycle Awareness Program to educate motorists and bicyclists on how to "Share the Road." Our county has a good network of trails, but we need more, especially in the southern county. You can help build the proposed Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. Originally proposed in 1965, this trail was designated by Congress in 1983 as a component of the National Trails System. A study in 1987 showed the feasibility of this trail through Prince George's County and recommended its development. Isn't it time to start work on the trail? Please support its design and construction. People in our county and state should be able to safely bicycle to their work, schools, shopping, post office, library, and parks or other recreational facilities. Let's work together to make Prince George's County and Maryland a more bicycle-friendly and safe place.. |
