TOUR DE ACCOKEEK Class CC AND UP 16 mi. 5:30 PM from Accokeek Firehouse. A long time mid-week club favorite is back on the schedule for 2018. It's not too long, nor too short, nor too fast. It is a CC-Touring class, so please be able to ride at a sustained 12 - 14 ams. Faster riders are welcome, and there is usually a fast and fun and "slightly" competitive group in front. For all the rest of us, there is usually a B-class group in the middle, and a true CC group (which also stands for the "casual conversation" group) bringing up the rear. No one gets dropped; there will always be a designated person riding "sweep." This is a great skills-building ride. We also go down a pretty long hill (expect to reach 35 mph or more!), and of course, what goes down must go up, so there's a good "double-climb" hill at about mile 12. A rest stop at the shore of the Potomac River around mile 10. Come out and join the fun! Some riders like to go to the local B&J Carry-Out after the ride for a sandwich or ice cream. See you on Wednesday.
Dir: Take Md 210 south approximately 10 mi. from the beltway. Go right on Livingston Road at the Accokeek Rd 373 light (B&J Carryout). The fire station is on right after about 3/4 mi. Park toward the back.[16111 Livingston Rd, Accokeek, MD]

SPERRYVILLE TO SKYLINE-IN, OVER, & OUT Class A/AA 69/Rider's Choice mi. 8:00 AM from 12018 Lee Hwy, Sperryville, VA.. Join me on a "make-it-your-own" ride in the mountains. I'll be riding from Sperryville to Big Meadows on Skyline Drive and then backtracking on Skyline to head to Elk Wallow before turning back to Sperryville. This is an at your own pace/distance ride and the group may break apart during the course of the ride. Because it is generally an out and back, you can adjust the distance to what suits you best, however, you should let the ride leader know if you end up choosing a different distance. Please plan to be self-sufficient. The ride leader will make a best effort to ensure riders return to the start. The entrance fee to Shenandoah National Park has risen to $15 per rider, however, annual park pass holders may bring in up to three additional riders on a pass. So please bring your pass if you have one so others need not pay. If you don't have a pass, be sure to bring money to enter the park in case we do not have enough passes to cover all riders. Food/Water should be available at Skyland, Big Meadows Wayside, and Elk Wallow Wayside, however, be sure to bring adequate supplies just in case. Estimated elevation for this ride for the 69 miles is 6,900'+. GPS route at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28203606 Please contact ride leader in advance if you plan to attend so that I can be sure to let you know of any changes on the morning of the ride.

SUE-PER THURSDAY EVENING PACELINE (STEP!)
Class A+ TRAINING- AA 3 25.8 mi. 5:30 PM from Casey Jones Restaurant in La Plata. Let's build a contingent of weekly Thursday A riders to experience the joys of paceline riding, where the sum is always greater than the parts. "STEP" also = Shared Tempo Encourages People! The goal of this weekly ride is NOT to split the group by ability levels. Instead, we stay together, holding position, even on the hills; if you are a stronger rider, and you want to save it up for the weekend, enjoy the satisfaction of helping EVERYONE in the group finish faster, safer, and together. Slower riders, take shorter pulls; it's fine to rotate straight to the back- come grow with us! Upper end B+ riders may be able to keep an A pace while drafting in a larger group; so if you are on the cusp, but afraid to be an anchor- give the ride leader a call to discuss. If we all work well together, it may end up as an AA 3 pace. Plan to be flexible and have fun. Please plan to park in the back of the lot. APPLE, PEACH, BERRY MASHUP Class CC 56 mi. 9:00 AM from Burwell. This is the latest in a series of rides where we try to breathe life into the virtually extinct Virginia CC ride category -- by leading at an honest CC pace (12-13 mph. This ride is also posted with PPTC. In fact we designed this route by combining the best of several legacy PPTC events, including the Berryville Century and Peach Picker and Apple Blossom rides. Most of the terrain is gently rolling hills surrounded by orchards and fields. We'll cross the Shenandoah River at least twice -- once on a bridge that's only recently re-opened after being under construction for years. There are no major hills -- just an easy 2300 feet of climbing. We'll start at the Burwell Morgan Mill (the 75-mile rest stop for the now-defunct Berryville Century). Please don't park in the mill parking lot; try parking on the street along side. We're just planning one official rest stop -- about half-way through -- at a 7-11 in Middletown. But there are a few other places to stop before and after. Please bring your own copy of the cue sheet or GPS. We will not have extra paper cue sheets. RWGPS: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28221934 If you don't know how to create a cue sheet from RWGPS, contact us in advance and we'll send you one via email. Ride's a no-go if rain chance is higher than 30 percent or predicted temps are "much" above 85 degrees. If we have to cancel for Saturday, we'll likely try for Sunday. We will post changes or a cancellation on Yahoo, but if you have questions, feel free to contact ride leaders with questions.

3-BUMP CHUMP Class B+ AND UP 30+ mi. 9:00 AM from Manokeek Village Center. Started this flexible route 2 years ago, and mentioned it to several riders, of which only a few have taken me up on it. It's a regular workout route, and is a series of moderate bumps and "push sections" including Mill Hill, Bumpy Oak, and Barry's Hill. The "CHUMP" part ... well, that's to be experienced. No rest breaks, water fountain at Arthur Ross Rd., bring a snack, as the ride can be up to 90mi if the feel is "let's keep going." Distance dependent on how quickly heads start dropping. Cheers, Michael Nobody left behind, start together-finish together.
Dir: From the Washington Beltway (I-95), take Indian Head Hwy Md 210 south towards Indian Head for approximately ten miles, turn left onto Berry Rd Md 228, after a half mile turn right onto Manning Rd and then take the second right into the Manokeek Shopping Village. Park in front of Starbucks. [7053 Berry Rd, Accokeek, MD 20607]

HISTORIC BRIDGES OF FREDERICK COUNTY Class CC/TOURING 59 mi. 9:00 AM from Utica District Park. A scenic tour of rural Frederick County, showcasing many of the county's historic bridges. In addition to crossing the three well-known covered bridges, this route passes over a number of the county's historic metal truss bridges and also visits the unique and seldom-seen Rocky Ridge Big Slide. As befits a Touring class ride, we'll stop at these historic sights long enough to take pictures (and, in the case of the Big Slide, wonder what on earth they were thinking). Terrain is rural and rolling, featuring a mix of well known and seldom-seen rural roads. Scenic, rolling terrain with 2575' of elevation gain and a maximum grade of 6.1%. Route map & GPS files are in the club's RWGPS Route Library: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27493106 and the cue sheet is in the Cloud: https://bit.ly/2rIZM4q This is a BYOQ (Bring Your Own Cue Sheet) Printed copies will be available by prior arrangement.

WEATHER RULES

Unless otherwise stated, rides may be canceled if the temperature is less than 40 degrees or the chance of precipitation is greater than 50% on www.weather.com during the ride. Call the ride leader if in doubt.

Ride Leaders Guidelines

  1. Prepare a cue sheet and/or map (either new or existing club route) and scout the route before the ride. You may use cue sheets in the club's cue sheet library. Other good places to find cue sheets or to create a cue sheet are www.BikeRouteToaster.com, www.RideWithGPS.com, www.Bikely.com, and www.MapMyRide.com.
  2. Submit the ride to the Ride Schedule with the online Ride Submission Form.   Rides submitted will automatically appear on the online schedule. To submit multiples rides, use your browser's "back" button to return to the ride submission form.
  3. If you have a cell phone, include its number on the cue sheet and have your cell phone on during the ride.
  4. Arrive 10-15 minutes before the ride start time.
  5. Have all riders sign a release sign-up form.
  6. Give all riders a cue sheet and/or map.
  7. Welcome the riders and brief them on details of ride stops, problems, pace, etc.
  8. Make sure the riders wear helmets.
  9. "Lead from the rear" or appoint someone to "ride sweep!"
  10. Ride at the advertised pace!
  11. Carry the sign-up sheet with you on the ride so that you have riders' emergency contact information if needed.
  12. After the ride, post your ride report at http://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports.

Rider Responsibilities

  1. Arrive early to sign-in and be ready to leave on time.
  2. Some starting points do not have restrooms, plan accordingly.
  3. Make sure your bicycle is in proper working order before you arrive.
  4. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, water bottle and snack.
  5. Carry identification and emergency money.
  6. Sign a ride waiver and get a cue sheet and/or map from the ride leader.
  7. Wear a helmet!
  8. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws.
  9. Do not "bike off" more than you can do. Go on rides within your ability, interest and experience level. If in doubt, phone the ride leader.
  10. Riders should maintain the pace as advertised. The rider may ride faster or slower than this pace if s/he knows the route and advises the leader accordingly. In this case the leader will not be responsible for the cyclists safe return or completion of the ride.
  11. Riders should advise the ride leader if the rider will not complete the ride or deviate from the designated route.
  12. Riders should warn nearby cyclists of road debris or, when in the rear, warning leading cyclists of approaching motorists from behind.
  13. Riders should as simple courtesy help out others with mechanical problems. Riders will try to help but there is no obligation to wait for cyclists with major breakdowns.
  14. Riders should use common sense and courtesy.
