July 4
100% ALL BIKE DC LOOP Class CC/TOURING 57 mi. 8:00 AM from BicycleSPACE 440 K ST NW, Washington, DC 20001. What better way to celebrate a July 4th then with a bike ride in the nation's capital. We will ride and grind it out for some 57 miles at something like 3,200 feet elevation. This ride will stay 100% in DC (no kicking out to Maryland or Virginia in order to maintain the integrity of the loop) as we make our way around DC. We ride through every Quadrant in DC and see things along the way like the Earthwork American Civil War Forts, boundary stones, rumble through places like the Arboretum, Rock Creek Park, Hains Point, the Southwest Waterfront, cruise by the Tidal Basin, the Lincoln Memorial and so on. For those looking to do the whole ride from beginning to end I would say the ride will be in the 5 hour range with time allowed for stop and go riding in the city and stopping along the way for group pictures and restroom/water breaks, but please feel free to break off from the ride at any point and time if need be. As for eats, we can stop for mid point of the ride (30 mile mark) in the Palisades neighborhood at places like the 7th Hill Pizza joint. However, I advise bringing your own riding eats. I may have some cue sheets for the ride, but best that you print them off from the provided Ride with GPS link here: https://goo.gl/Doi8NC
Dir: For those traveling to ride by vehicle, please take note parking is meter free on DC's streets on July 4th as it is a holiday and there are various parking garages and lots within the immediate radius of BicycleSPACE. You can also check out www.spothero.com for parking availability and discounts on nearby lots. For those traveling by Metrorail, take the Green line and get off at the Gallery Place Chinatown station. Exit the station on 7th St NW and head north 3 blocks to K St NW. Make a right on K St NW and BicycleSPACE is 3 blocks on the right. For directions to the BicycleSPACE, please feel free to call the shop at (202) 962-0123. TOUR DE ACCOKEEK Class CC AND UP 16 mi. 5:30 PM from Accokeek Firehouse. A long time mid-week club favorite is back on the schedule for 2018. It's not too long, nor too short, nor too fast. It is a CC-Touring class, so please be able to ride at a sustained 12 - 14 ams. Faster riders are welcome, and there is usually a fast and fun and "slightly" competitive group in front. For all the rest of us, there is usually a B-class group in the middle, and a true CC group (which also stands for the "casual conversation" group) bringing up the rear. No one gets dropped; there will always be a designated person riding "sweep." This is a great skills-building ride. We also go down a pretty long hill (expect to reach 35 mph or more!), and of course, what goes down must go up, so there's a good "double-climb" hill at about mile 12. A rest stop at the shore of the Potomac River around mile 10. Come out and join the fun! Some riders like to go to the local B&J Carry-Out after the ride for a sandwich or ice cream. See you on Wednesday.
Dir: Take Md 210 south approximately 10 mi. from the beltway. Go right on Livingston Road at the Accokeek Rd 373 light (B&J Carryout). The fire station is on right after about 3/4 mi. Park toward the back.[16111 Livingston Rd, Accokeek, MD]

SUE-PER THURSDAY EVENING PACELINE (STEP!) Class A+ TRAINING - AA 3 25.8 mi. 5:30 PM from Casey Jones Restaurant in La Plata. Let's build a contingent of weekly Thursday A riders to experience the joys of paceline riding, where the sum is always greater than the parts. "STEP" also = Shared Tempo Encourages People! The goal of this weekly ride is NOT to split the group by ability levels. Instead, we stay together, holding position, even on the hills; if you are a stronger rider, and you want to save it up for the weekend, enjoy the satisfaction of helping EVERYONE in the group finish faster, safer, and together. Slower riders, take shorter pulls; it's fine to rotate straight to the back- come grow with us! Upper end B+ riders may be able to keep an A pace while drafting in a larger group; so if you are on the cusp, but afraid to be an anchor- give the ride leader a call to discuss. If we all work well together, it may end up as an AA 3 pace. Plan to be flexible and have fun. Please plan to park in the back of the lot. WEATHER RULES

Unless otherwise stated, rides may be canceled if the temperature is less than 40 degrees or the chance of precipitation is greater than 50% on www.weather.com during the ride. Call the ride leader if in doubt.

Ride Leaders Guidelines

  1. Prepare a cue sheet and/or map (either new or existing club route) and scout the route before the ride. You may use cue sheets in the club's cue sheet library. Other good places to find cue sheets or to create a cue sheet are www.BikeRouteToaster.com, www.RideWithGPS.com, www.Bikely.com, and www.MapMyRide.com.
  2. Submit the ride to the Ride Schedule with the online Ride Submission Form.   Rides submitted will automatically appear on the online schedule. To submit multiples rides, use your browser's "back" button to return to the ride submission form.
  3. If you have a cell phone, include its number on the cue sheet and have your cell phone on during the ride.
  4. Arrive 10-15 minutes before the ride start time.
  5. Have all riders sign a release sign-up form.
  6. Give all riders a cue sheet and/or map.
  7. Welcome the riders and brief them on details of ride stops, problems, pace, etc.
  8. Make sure the riders wear helmets.
  9. "Lead from the rear" or appoint someone to "ride sweep!"
  10. Ride at the advertised pace!
  11. Carry the sign-up sheet with you on the ride so that you have riders' emergency contact information if needed.
  12. After the ride, post your ride report at http://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports.

Rider Responsibilities

  1. Arrive early to sign-in and be ready to leave on time.
  2. Some starting points do not have restrooms, plan accordingly.
  3. Make sure your bicycle is in proper working order before you arrive.
  4. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, water bottle and snack.
  5. Carry identification and emergency money.
  6. Sign a ride waiver and get a cue sheet and/or map from the ride leader.
  7. Wear a helmet!
  8. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws.
  9. Do not "bike off" more than you can do. Go on rides within your ability, interest and experience level. If in doubt, phone the ride leader.
  10. Riders should maintain the pace as advertised. The rider may ride faster or slower than this pace if s/he knows the route and advises the leader accordingly. In this case the leader will not be responsible for the cyclists safe return or completion of the ride.
  11. Riders should advise the ride leader if the rider will not complete the ride or deviate from the designated route.
  12. Riders should warn nearby cyclists of road debris or, when in the rear, warning leading cyclists of approaching motorists from behind.
  13. Riders should as simple courtesy help out others with mechanical problems. Riders will try to help but there is no obligation to wait for cyclists with major breakdowns.
  14. Riders should use common sense and courtesy.
